Jerry Bruckheimer, longtime producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, has revived expectations about the possible return of Johnny Depp as the charismatic Jack Sparrow in the sixth installment of the franchise. In a recent interview, the filmmaker confirmed his possible return as the drunken pirate, provided the actor approves the script, currently in an advanced stage of development.
Bruckheimer explained that he has been in talks with Depp about the possibility and that his decision will depend on how the character is written. "If he likes the way the role is framed, I think he would do it . It all depends on what's on the page," the producer told Entertainment Weekly . The last film in the series, Salazar's Revenge , was released in 2017, and Disney has since been working on various drafts to continue the story, including a proposed reboot of the franchise.

Although the studio cut ties with Depp in 2018, Bruckheimer has publicly insisted that he would like to bring him back. He emphasized that the actor's performance, inspired by figures like Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards , was key in defining Sparrow's identity. "He created the character. That wasn't in the original script," he recalled.
The producer also confirmed that Jeff Nathanson, the screenwriter of the fifth installment, is working on the new story alongside Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, with a special emphasis on polishing the first and second acts, while the third is practically complete. Depp's return would mark a significant shift from his statements during the highly publicized trial against Amber Heard in 2022, when he stated that he wouldn't return to the franchise "not even for $300 million and a million alpacas."
However, the project's development and the personal connection with Bruckheimer could reopen the door to a collaboration. For now, the key will remain the approval of the final script , which the producer claims to be very close to completion.
